I was pretty shocked to see this gigantic bird hanging out poolside in our back yard. I think it's a blue heron! He was probably disappointed and confused about the lack of fish in our pool, but he hung out for quite a few minutes looking around.
It's a blue heron, aka the "Chesapeake Pteradactyl." They love to annihilate suburban ponds, and s/he was likely stopping by to see if you had any koi - one of their favorites.
They nest in big social rookeries in remote marshy/swampy locations, so you don't have to worry about him/her setting up a big poopy nest in your yard!
I'm so jealous! About the most exotic thing I've ever seen was a parakeet - okay, so I live in Poland, where we have plenty of storks - but still, a heron?
Definitely a Great Blue Heron. We have one that visits our small pond at times and it always thrills the grandkids and excites the dogs no end! I'm pretty sure he comes from a nearby river. Jim http://www.jmbamboo.com http://www.bigplants.com

Do you have a lake or pond nearby?
Yes, a little odd to look out and see a heron by your pool. Wonderful, but a little odd.
Yes, there's a pond not too far away, so that's probably his regular haunt
